Benetint Dark Cherry Review: Is the Viral Black Cherry Stain Worth It?

Benefit Benetint Lip & Cheek Stain in Dark Cherry next to fresh cherries, a blush brush and a swatch of the tint

Last updated: October 2026

Dark, moody lips are back this fall. Pinterest’s editors picked “vamp romantic” as one of the season’s big beauty trends, and black cherry is the shade everyone keeps talking about. Benefit’s Benetint has been a cult favorite since the 1970s, and its newer Dark Cherry shade has been all over TikTok as an easy way to get the look. But is a $28 tint really worth it, or is it just good marketing?

The quick verdict

Glowy

Researched, not tested

As a blush, Dark Cherry is a lovely way to try the black cherry trend without going full goth. It lasts all day and looks like your skin, just flushed. On lips it’s trickier: it can feel drying and settle into lines, so you’ll want a balm or gloss on top.

Best for

  • A natural-looking flush that lasts all day
  • Trying the fall black cherry look in a wearable way
  • Oily or combination skin

Skip it if

  • Your skin or lips are often dry
  • You’re sensitive to fragrance
  • You like taking your time to blend

Price: $28 for 0.2 oz (6 ml) at Ulta and Benefit

What I looked at: the brand’s claims and ingredient list, plus hands-on reviews from beauty editors and bloggers

Standout ingredients: a simple water and glycerin base (it also contains fragrance)

What is Benetint Dark Cherry?

Benetint is Benefit’s classic liquid lip and cheek stain. It’s a thin, water-based tint that sinks into your skin and leaves a flush of color instead of sitting on top like a cream or powder. The original shade is a rosy red. Dark Cherry is a deeper version that Who What Wear describes as a burgundy-brown, and Grazia calls a “ruddy brown.”

Benefit says it’s long-wearing, waterproof, transfer-proof and buildable, and you can use it on both cheeks and lips. One small bottle holds 0.2 oz (6 ml), and since you only need a drop or two, it lasts a long time.

How to use it

  1. Prep first. Moisturize your skin, and put on a little lip balm and blot it off if you’re using it on lips.
  2. Work one cheek at a time. Dot a small amount on the apple of your cheek and blend right away, because it sets fast.
  3. Use a brush or sponge if you can. Fingers work, but they can leave patches if you’re slow.
  4. Build it up slowly. Start sheer, then add another layer for a deeper flush.
  5. For lips, top it with gloss or balm. It gives that blurry, bitten black cherry look and stops it from feeling dry.

What reviewers love

  • It lasts all day. Who What Wear writer Brittany Davy wore Dark Cherry for a full day and said it lasted without smudging or needing reapplication. It also passed her transfer test.
  • It looks natural. She called the result “the perfect balance between glowy and natural.”
  • A little goes a long way. Reviewers agree you only need a tiny amount, so the bottle lasts.
  • It works on lots of skin tones. Grazia’s beauty writer, who has a medium olive complexion, said the shade worked well on her, and Who What Wear listed “suits all skin tones” as a pro.

The most common complaints

  • The formula is very runny. Who What Wear’s reviewer said it started running down her face when she used the applicator, so she switched to a blush brush.
  • It dries fast. You don’t get much time to blend, which can lead to patches.
  • It can be drying, especially on dry skin and on lips, where it may settle into lines.
  • It contains fragrance, which is worth knowing if your skin is sensitive.

What’s inside

The formula is simple: mostly water, butylene glycol and glycerin, with preservatives, the color pigments and fragrance. There’s nothing special for skin care here, so think of it purely as makeup. Glycerin adds a little hydration, but it won’t replace a lip balm.

Cheaper alternatives and other options

  • essence What a Tint Lip & Cheek Tint (about $5): The budget dupe for the original rosy Benetint. Beauty blogger Musings of a Muse said it lasted about 12 hours on her cheeks and she found no difference from Benetint in formula or wear. It only comes in one pink-red shade, so it won’t give you the dark cherry look.
  • Milk Makeup Cooling Water Jelly Tint (about $26): Not cheaper, but a good option if you prefer a stick. The Splash shade is a deep berry.
  • Wonderskin Wonder Blading Lip Stain (about $22): If you mostly want long-lasting lip color, this is the better pick for lips. See my Wonderskin lip stain review.

Final verdict: glowy or not?

Glowy, especially as a blush. Dark Cherry is one of the easiest ways to try this fall’s black cherry trend, because a sheer flush feels so much more wearable than a dark lipstick. It lasts all day and looks like real skin. Just be ready to blend fast, and if your lips are dry, use a balm underneath or a gloss on top. If you only want the rosy original look, the $5 essence tint is a great budget swap.

FAQ

Is Benetint Dark Cherry good on lips?

It can be, but it works best on smooth, moisturized lips. Reviewers say it can feel drying and settle into lines, so layer a balm or gloss on top for the blurry black cherry look.

How long does Benetint last?

Benefit says it’s long-wearing and transfer-proof, and Who What Wear’s reviewer said Dark Cherry lasted her whole day on her cheeks without needing a touch-up. On lips, expect it to fade sooner, especially if you’re eating and drinking.

Will Dark Cherry look too dark on fair skin?

Because it’s sheer and buildable, you can keep it very light. Start with one thin layer and add more only if you want a deeper flush.

Is it the same as the original Benetint?

It’s the same formula in a deeper shade. The original is a rosy red, while Dark Cherry leans burgundy-brown.
